A long pause in writing

is caused by the fact that I have already returned from Russia. I have still a few topics to write about, and some pictures to show so I’ll keep writing. One of the occasions is my presence on the Russian TV!

Baron Munhauzen

(Kadr z filmu “Ach ten Munhauzen” z Olgiem Jankowskim w roli tytulowej)
Gdy niemiecki baron Munhauzen jako mlody czlowiek wybieral sie do Rosji, jego rodzina uprzedzila go, iz:
1. w Rosji sa bardzo mocne zimy i napoje
2. Rosji umyslem nie obejmiesz (po prostu jej nie zrozumiesz)
3. co Rosjaninowi sluzy, Niemca zabije.
I ja sie pod tym w pelni podpisuje.

Englishman in St. Petersburg

Sting was professional and great as always. I wish the sound system was better and could carry the whole concert well. Meanwhile the first part had poor loudness system. Moreover, Russians don’t speak English! There was poor connection between Sting and the crowd. It got better some time later. I’m happy I saw this concert already in Helsinki. I know how great it could be. Nevertheless, “King of Pain” on Dvortsovaya Ploshad or “Desert Rose”, once the speakers started to work better, flew over the roofs of St. Pete.

The truth is Sting doesn’t really need the whole symphonic orchestra. His last song was played by him just on a guitar with a descrete company of drums. “Message in the bottle” could be the only song he played and it would already prove he is the great, true artist.

And this is what Sting was singing about and it went without any reaction from the crowd (except of mine of course).

“In Europe and America, there’s a growing feeling of hysteria
Conditioned to respond to all the threats
In the rhetorical speeches of the Soviets
Mr. Krushchev said we will bury you
I don’t subscribe to this point of view
It would be such an ignorant thing to do
If the Russians love their children too

How can I save my little boy from Oppenheimer’s deadly toy
There is no monopoly in common sense
On either side of the political fence
We share the same biology
Regardless of ideology
Believe me when I say to you
I hope the Russians love their children too

There is no historical precedent
To put the words in the mouth of the President
There’s no such thing as a winnable war
It’s a lie that we don’t believe anymore
Mr. Reagan says we will protect you
I don’t subscribe to this point of view
Believe me when I say to you
I hope the Russians love their children too

We share the same biology
Regardless of ideology
What might save us, me, and you
Is that the Russians love their children too”

My favourite place in St. Petersburg (Moje ulubione miejsce w Petersburgu)

must be Nevsky Prospekt. Hold on! Don’t get me wrong. Not just Nevsky on a regular day with lines of loud cars and their annoyed drivers. And not Nevsky with crowds of tourists wondering slowly on the street like certain animals considered as saint in one hot country. I love Nevsky Prospekt on a day when you get to walk in the middle of it, when automobiles are forbidden to drive and thousands of local people take over control over this street. Just like it happened on the Victory Day, and just as it happened after Sting concert on June 16, 2011. These two days differed, however. Yesterday Sting’s energy was carried on until Ulitsa Sadovaya despite the fact that officially Nevsky was not closed for car traffic. Sure, there was police but they looked really hopeless facing the crowd. The crowd that created a special kind of “voice” Mexican wave. This Mexican wave, a term known for participants of football games or athletics events, was carried by shouting people and started from Dvortsovaya Ploshad until Gostinny Dvor. Unforgettable experience!

Moje ulubione miejsce w Petersburgu? Nevsky Prospekt. A tlum szalal. W pewnym momencie rozlegly sie krzyki pod Placem Zamkowym, ten krzyk zaczal sie przenosic wzdluz ulicy i ciagnal az do Goscinnego Dworu. Byla to taka glosowa Meksykanska flaga, znana kibicom pilki noznej czy lekkiej atletyki. Bylo to zupelnie niezapomniane przezycie!

Regaty “Zlote wioslo” – International Regatta “Golden Blades”

12 czerwca, tego samego dnia, kiedy Rosja obchodzi swoj dzien niepodleglosci, na rzece Fontance odbyly sie regaty roznych obiektow plywajacych. Przyjechali reprezentanci z kilkunastu krajow, w tym mistrzowie swiata w sprincie kajakarskim. Udalo mi sie zrobic dziesiatki zdjec, bo impreza byla pierwsza klasa, a lodki roznego rodzaju. Oto kilka z nich.

12 June, on the same day as Russia’s Independence Day, took place International Regatta “Golden Blades”. It was placed on the Fontanka river. Representatives of several countries came to participate in this event, including world champions in sprint (25meters). I took tens of pictures and a selection of some I present here.
